A personal practitioner reflection from Vellore, Tamil Nadu
By Jade Stewart | Aurore Holistic Health
In July 2025, I travelled to Sri Narayani Holistic Centre in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, to undertake a seven-day, individually prescribed Panchakarma and rejuvenation program.
As an Ayurvedic practitioner and bodyworker, it was important to me that I experienced this work personally before recommending the Centre to others. I wanted to live the process, understand its depth and observe how my own body responded under the care of an Ayurvedic doctor and experienced therapists.
Panchakarma is sometimes described simply as an Ayurvedic detox. In reality, it is a much deeper and more carefully sequenced therapeutic process. It requires proper assessment, individualisation, rest, supportive food and thoughtful aftercare.
My experience at Sri Narayani brought all of these elements together within a deeply spiritual environment.
What is Panchakarma?
The Sanskrit word pancha means five and karma means action. Classical Panchakarma refers to five principal cleansing actions used within Ayurveda.
A person does not automatically receive every action. The doctor decides what is suitable according to the individual’s constitution, current state of health, strength, digestion, age, medical history and the season.
A traditional program may move through preparation, prescribed cleansing or balancing therapies and a period of rebuilding. The process supports the body’s natural pathways of elimination while protecting digestion, stability and strength.
Our particular focus is on hormonal health and nervous system support through individualised, doctor-led Ayurvedic care.
This is why Panchakarma should be physician-led. It is not a standardised spa package, and it is not suitable for every person or every stage of health.
My seven-day program
My program was created by Dr Janani following an individual assessment and was carried out with her senior therapists.
The sequence included:
Abhyanga: Warm medicated oil massage selected to support the nervous system, tissues and circulation.
Triphala Dhara: A continuous herbal decoction treatment.
External Bastis: Localised applications of medicated oil to the neck and back.
Pinda Sweda: Heated herbal bolus therapy.
Internal Basti: Doctor-prescribed medicated enema therapy.
Shirodhara: A steady stream of warm oil applied to the forehead.
Ayurvedic food: Simple meals chosen to support treatment and digestion.
The therapies were not chosen in isolation. They formed a sequence and were adjusted through observation and medical review.
At my final assessment, my doctor recorded that I was approximately 75 per cent improved after the seven days. I returned to Australia feeling meaningful change in areas I had been working with for many years.
More than physical treatment
Sri Narayani Holistic Centre specialises in Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, yoga and other traditional approaches, with each guest receiving an individual treatment plan.
The Centre is also connected with Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre, providing access to medical support when required.
For me, the setting was an essential part of the experience. Sri Narayani Peedam is the spiritual home established by Sri Sakthi Amma in Thirumalaikodi, outside Vellore.
My mornings often began with Ganesha Abhishekam and Ganesha Yagam before treatment. Afternoons included meditation in the Saraswati Meditation Hall, while evenings could include Sri Sakthi Amma’s puja and visits to sacred temples in the surrounding area.
The integration of Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, nourishing food, mantra, meditation, temple practice and prayer created a form of care that felt complete.
The therapies worked with the body, while the environment encouraged quietness, surrender and genuine rest.
Seven days or a longer program?
A seven-day program can be a valuable introduction and may offer meaningful support, but it is not the same as a longer classical Panchakarma.
Programs of 21 or 28 days allow more time for preparation, treatment, observation and rebuilding. The most appropriate duration depends on the person and must be decided with the treating doctor.
The program itself is only one part of the process. Aftercare matters. Rest, a simple diet, a gentle daily routine, appropriate herbs and a gradual return to normal activity help the body integrate the work.
Panchakarma is most supportive when we give it sufficient time before, during and after treatment.
Beginning with an online consultation
If you are interested in a future Panchakarma at Sri Narayani Holistic Centre, I recommend beginning with a paid online consultation directly with one of the Centre’s Ayurvedic doctors.
This gives the doctor an opportunity to review your health history, understand your needs and advise whether Panchakarma is appropriate before travel plans are finalised.
You are also welcome to contact me directly through Aurore Holistic Health. I can help guide you through the booking process with Sri Narayani Holistic Centre and explain what to expect when preparing for a stay.
All medical assessments, treatment decisions and prescriptions remain directly between you and the Centre’s qualified doctors.
